Veteran Nollywood actress Nkechi Nweje has passed away at the age of 56 after a brief illness.
Nweje, widely recognized for her motherly roles, was particularly known for her performance in “Ezigbo Nwanyi Onitsha’.
Movie producer Stanley Ajemba, popularly known as Stanley Ontop, confirmed her passing on March 23. Sharing the news alongside her picture, he expressed his shock and grief.
“Nollywood in tears as we lost one of our vibrant actresses, @nkechi.nweje, after a brief illness. Couldn’t post since morning because it was like a dream to me. Ezigbo Nwanyi Onitsha,” he wrote.
He also reflected on their close relationship, stating, “Rest in peace, ma’am. My best friend, she always called me on the phone, advising me. The last time we spoke was during the Queenth saga. She said, ‘Ontop, stop.’ I’m still speechless.”
Following the announcement, Nollywood colleagues, including Destiny Etiko and Rita Edochie, have shared their condolences.
Nkechi Nweje is survived by her husband, Dr. Azubuike Nweje, and six children.
