French journalist and founder of StoryMi, Sophie Bouillon, has shared the story behind her initiative, which provides fellowships for Nigerian documentary filmmakers.
Speaking at the StoryMi Project Showcase during the iRepresent International Documentary Film Festival (iRep) on March 28, Bouillon explained why she chose to support Nigerian filmmakers and journalists through funding.
Having worked with Agence France-Presse (AFP) in Africa, she observed a lack of opportunities for Nigerian journalists to grow within the global media landscape.
“I got frustrated with the narrative being told about Nigeria, Togo, and other African countries. Another thing that frustrated me was the limited opportunities for Nigerian journalists to advance globally. This is why I left AFP to set up StoryMi,” she said.
Bouillon also shared how the StoryMi documentary film fellowship was developed in partnership with the French Embassy. According to her, the program has nurtured over 15 talented Nigerian filmmakers and storytellers.
“It is one of our most prestigious programs, and I am proud of it—especially the successes that have exceeded my expectations,” she added.
As part of the showcase, Bouillon introduced four short films from past and present StoryMi fellows, which were screened at iRep. The selected shorts included:
– “Beyond Olympic Glory” by Shedrack Salami
– “On Your Own” by Itegboje Daniel
– “When Tomorrow Comes” by Chidiebere Ugbe
– “No Way Home” by Aima Ojemen
Speaking to exclusively to The Nollywood Reporter Salami shared how the StoryMi fellowship had shaped his storytelling approach.
“I never thought I would become a master in storytelling not just telling stories but crafting narratives that truly move people,” he said.
Closing the session, Bouillon encouraged filmmakers to watch out for the next fellowship call. She also revealed plans to seek funding specifically for Nigerian writers and photographers.
