The African artistes earn global recognition on Spotify’s midyear best songs list.
Spotify has released its Editors’ Picks: Best Songs of 2025 (So Far), and African artistes are among those spotlighted. Rema, Moliy, and Obongjayar feature on the influential list, which highlights 50 standout tracks chosen for their artistic merit rather than chart performance.
The playlist, released on June 30, includes genre-spanning selections from across the globe. According to Sulinna Ong, Spotify’s Global Head of Editorial, the list focuses on creative excellence:
“Our Editors’ Picks playlist isn’t about what’s trending—it’s about the tracks that stood out for all the right reasons. Our music editors dug deeper to spotlight songs that intrigued us sonically, culturally, or through exceptional songwriting.”
Rema’s “Baby (Is It a Crime),” a smooth, Sade-sampling single that debuted in early 2025, was among the highlights. The song has become a streaming powerhouse and is currently the most-played Nigerian track on Spotify this year, with over 56 million streams.
Moliy’s “Shake It to the Max (Fly),” featuring Silent Addy, Skillibeng, and Shenseea, was noted for its genre-bending production and viral dance appeal. The song also made Spotify’s Global Songs of the Summer Prediction list in May.
Obongjayar’s “Sweet Danger” was selected for its rich fusion of traditional African rhythms, Fela-inspired instrumentation, and contemporary sound design.
Other artistes featured include Miley Cyrus, Kehlani, Lady Gaga, Leon Thomas, Hannah Cohen, and underground acts like Wednesday and sombr.
