American actress Lili Reinhart has been tapped to star in the film adaptation of “The Love Hypothesis,” the bestselling novel by Ali Hazelwood.

Best known for her role on “Riverdale,” Reinhart will also serve as executive producer on the upcoming romantic comedy from Amazon MGM Studios and MRC.

Reinhart is set to play Olive Smith, an ambitious Ph.D. candidate who enters a fake relationship with her young professor, Dr. Adam J. Carlsen—a central dynamic in Hazelwood’s viral hit.

Joining her as executive producers are Hazelwood and Catherine Hagedorn, with Elizabeth Cantillon attached as producer. The film will be directed by Primetime Emmy winner Claire Scanlon, known for “The Good Place” and “Set It Up.” The screenplay is written by Sarah Rothschild, best known for Netflix’s 2020 action-comedy “The Sleepover.”

Reinhart last starred in and executive produced the 2022 Netflix rom-com “Look Both Ways,” in which she portrayed a young woman navigating two parallel life paths. Her upcoming slate includes several high-profile projects: the indie series “Hal and Harper,” the mystery-thriller “American Sweatshop,” the horror feature “Forbidden Fruits,” and another Amazon MGM title, “Ali & Anthony Garland’s Fake Wedding,” which she is producing through her company, Small Victory.

Originally published in 2021 by Berkley Books, “The Love Hypothesis” became an international sensation, earning Amazon’s Best Romance of the Year and landing on the New York Times bestseller list. The novel’s viral popularity was largely driven by TikTok’s BookTok community.

Since then, Hazelwood has released several other popular titles, including “Bride,” “Deep End,” and “Not in Love.”

Reinhart is currently the only confirmed cast member. Additional casting, including for the role of the moody Dr. Adam J. Carlsen, is expected to be announced in the coming months.
