Sarah Kwaji’s “Out of Darkness” and Niyi Akinmolayan’s “Mikolo” have been selected in various categories at the Windsor International Black Film Festival (WIBFF) as the event prepares to celebrate Black cinematic excellence this August.
Lead actress Kehinde Bankole earned a nomination in the Best Actress category for “Out of Darkness,” which also received a nod for Best Editing.
Meanwhile, “Mikolo” secured a nomination for Best African Movie, with more selections expected to be announced in the days leading up to the festival.
Running from August 15–17 at Windsor’s Armouries Theatre, WIBFF has established itself as a vital platform for Black storytellers around the world. Now in its second year, the nonprofit festival has evolved into a comprehensive showcase of global talent, featuring feature films, documentaries, animation, and music videos.
The three-day event promises an immersive experience that goes beyond traditional screenings, incorporating panel discussions, hands-on workshops, and networking sessions designed to foster meaningful industry connections.
As previously reported by The Nollywood Reporter (TNR), “Out of Darkness” is Kwaji’s debut feature film, delving into the harrowing realities of postpartum depression, while “Mikolo” is a family-friendly fantasy adventure.
“Out of Darkness” is currently showing in cinemas, while “Mikolo” is available to stream on Prime Video.
