The Joel Kachi Benson-directed film will be showcased in Lagos as part of Alliance Française’s September cultural calendar.
Emmy-Winning Documentary “Madu” to Screen at Alliance Française
Emmy-winning documentary Madu will be screened at Alliance Française de Lagos in Ikeja on Sunday, September 28.
Directed by Joel Kachi Benson and co-directed by Matt Ogens, the film recently won two categories at the 2025 News and Documentary Emmy Awards—Outstanding Arts and Culture Documentary and Outstanding Direction.
Produced by Disney, Madu tells the story of Anthony Madu, a Nigerian ballet dancer who gained international recognition in 2020 after a viral video showed him dancing barefoot in the rain. The film follows his journey from Lagos to the United Kingdom, where he received a scholarship to study at Elmhurst Ballet School.
The screening forms part of Alliance Française de Lagos’ September cultural calendar, which also includes art exhibitions, drumming workshops, book readings, and additional film screenings. Among the scheduled films are La Projo, Cinémômes—a French-language children’s film and activity series—and Family Portraits, presented in collaboration with Screen Out Loud.
Madu is currently available for streaming on Disney+.
