By now, everyone has seen THAT video of Sir Bright Chimezie gleefully dancing to Davido and Omah Lay’s smash hit, With You. The energy, the moves, the sheer joy—-it’s the kind of moment that feels too real to be staged. And as it turns out, it wasn’t.
Appearing on Glitch Africa’s The Honest Bunch podcast on YouTube, the veteran singer recounted how it came to be and how he was caught unawares.
According to him, Davido had called to share that his 1983 classic, Because of English, had inspired With You. More surprised than elated, he had his son play him the song the next morning, and thence came his now-viral reaction.
“All those thing you see me do, I didn’t plan it… I didn’t even know my son was recording. If I had known, I’d have been more calm,” he said.
Apparently the pose he struck is what he does when rehearsing and trying to sink in the musical notes. “That was it, everything just went viral like that.”
Of course, the internet did what it does best: created a viral moment. Within days, the clip had racked up millions of views, merging nostalgia with the new wave of Afrobeats.
Meanwhile, With You continues to blaze its own trail. Boasting over 74 million streams on Spotify in just six months, it’s by far the biggest track from Davido’s 17-track album 5ive. But if we’re being honest, Chimezie’s spontaneous groove might just be its most unforgettable remix.
