His & Hers follows Netflix’s previous hit Behind Her Eyes, dropping a gripping revenge murder mystery with an unexpected ending that is both terrifying and unpredictable for viewers.

A brutally attacked woman, lies on the bonnet of a car, parked deep in a wood. helpless, she gasps for her last breath as life ebbs out of her. What a way to start a murder mystery? Who is the killer? Who is the woman? How did she get there? Netflix’s His & Hers takes viewers on a slow-burning but thrilling journey to find answers.

After the gruesome murder and a coincidental follow-up scene that appears like there’s a suspect, a female voiceover later intones why there are two sides to a story, necessitating the significance of the film’s title His & Hers but someone is always lying. At the beginning, the movie feels confusing with a plethora of twists that indulge viewers’ detective skills but nothing is truly as it seems.

As an adaptation of Alice Feeney’s 2020 novel of the same title, the mystery thriller set in Atlanta tells the story of Anna Andrews, a former TV news anchor who withdraws abruptly from her personal life and career. Her withdrawal was sparked by her intense grief over the loss of her daughter, who was barely two years old.

When Anna overhears news of a brutal murder in Dahlonega, a small town where she grew up, she hopes to revive her almost forgotten career with the coverage. Drawn by both professional instinct and unresolved ties to her past, she returns to Dahlonega and begins digging into the killing, convinced that the truth has been buried beneath layers of silence and almost forgotten high school history.

As Anna’s investigation deepens, she repeatedly clashes with her estranged husband Detective Jack Harper (Jon Bernthal), who is officially assigned to the case and is deeply suspicious of Anna’s sudden return and motives.  The series continues its thrilling journey by raising stakes, revealing shocking secrets and instilling suspicion around who the real killer might be in the end.

In His & Hers, questions flood viewers’ hearts in every scene pointing to a potential suspect or a motive. For viewers who think their detective skills are off the roof, with the ability to solve the mystery before the characters do, the show, developed by William Oldroyd, may be humbling. Only the patient viewers can unravel the hidden mysteries in the slow-burning film but they have to get to the end to find out. Just when they feel like the mystery is solvable, they are served with another twist.

One of the core themes aside from highlighting marriage, infidelity, grief, passion, betrayal and friendship,  His & Her captures the often underestimated love a mother has for her child. This sees Crystal R. Fox as Alice avenge a hidden rape incident against her daughter, Anna, delivering one of the most unexpected and unforgettable twist endings in His & Hers, in almost similar measure with Netflix’s previous British hit thriller Behind Her Eyes (2017), based on Sarah Pinborough’s novel. However, many like this writer, would agree that Behind Her Eyes remains unmatched.

Back to performances, Fox’s portrayal of Anna’s harmless, dementia-inflicted and invisible mother balances both the emotional core and thrilling mystery of the show. As a mother who accidentally stumbles on her daughter’s past and is forced to avenge a long forgotten injustice, her silence is strength. Her love is avenging. Her plan is meticulous. Her motive is unsuspecting.

Thessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal’s riveting performances in His & Hers drive viewers’ rooting interests, exploring revenge, love, family, betrayal and friendship.
Thessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal’s riveting performances in His & Hers drive viewers’ rooting interests, exploring revenge, love, family, betrayal and friendship.

Her performance truly stands out but is better appreciated at the end of the series. Jon Bernthal of The Bear and The Walking Dead as the small town detective Jack Harper in charge of the investigation into the murder also drives the thrilling suspense of His & Hers with his infidelity and secrets. His flawless chemistry with Tessa Thompson also elevated the rooting interest of viewers.

The series creatively ticks off its unpredictable thriller endings, with a calculated murder case. However, the goal to conceal the identity of the killer towards the end of the series left plot holes, if at all viewers would notice them. It is questionable that Lexy Jones is determined to antagonise Anna when flashbacks scenes of their friendship show Anna, protecting Lexy (formerly known as Catherine). Catherine was the one who left Anna to be raped not the other way round.

The six-part series of Feeney’s novel creatively ticks off the cinematography, costume and setting checklist. Tessa Thompson’s monochromatic and colourful fashion was unmissable throughout the series, depicting intentionality rather than random choices. Music sets the mood for sadness, excitement, argument and what have you.

Asides from being a mystery thriller, shots sold Dahlonega as a town to viewers, the serene environment, a community where everyone knows each other, admirable housing architecture and lifestyle.

It is pertinent to note that unravelling the murder case in His & Hers is likely to leave viewers as equally frustrated and intrigued as the characters (especially Jack Harper and Anna Andrew) solving the case, but that’s part of the show’s greatest appeal. How else would it be worth discussing if viewers could solve it instantly? The mystery thriller is slow-burning, frustrating, thrilling, unpredictable, but definitely binge-worthy.
