The Weekend, a thriller directed by Daniel Oriahi, is now available on HBO Max across Central and Eastern Europe, marking a significant international streaming release for the Nigerian film.
According to the filmmakers, the project is the first independently produced Nigerian thriller to debut on the platform. It is currently streaming in 15 countries across the region.
The film follows Nikiya, a woman who travels to meet her fiancé’s family, only for what begins as a routine weekend visit to unravel into a mystery.
The Weekend had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2024 before screening at the BFI London Film Festival and Screamfest Horror Film Festival. The film also received 16 nominations at the Africa Movie Academy Awards.
“What makes this moment even more special is knowing that The Weekend is the first independently produced Nigerian thriller to be on the platform,” the filmmakers said in a statement.
The cast includes Uzoamaka Aniunoh and Bucci Franklin in lead roles, alongside Ekpenyong Bassey Inyang, Meg Otanwa, Gloria Anozie-Young, Damilola Ogunsi, James Gardiner and Bryan Okoye.
