Nollywood producer Judith Audu has called for greater female representation in the music industry, using the Lagos premiere of Evi to highlight structural gaps facing women.
Speaking at the film’s premiere on March 22, Audu said the project was shaped not only by its story but by the need to address industry realities, particularly the limited presence of women in decision-making roles.
“With this film, I hope to provoke conversations in the music industry,” she said. “We don’t have enough female executives or representation at record labels, so many women have to go through men to succeed. That needs to change.”

Audu also emphasised the importance of creating safer and more inclusive spaces for women, adding that the industry must evolve to allow women to work freely and without barriers.
The producer reflected on the film’s development, noting that Evi began as a grant-backed project supported by organisations including Africa No Filter, with early encouragement playing a key role in bringing the production to life.
She also highlighted the film’s female-led structure, revealing that eight of its ten executive producers are women, a move she described as intentional in shaping both the film’s perspective and its production process.

Directed by Uyoyou Adia, Evi follows a rising music star forced to rebuild her life after a career setback, exploring themes of ambition, identity, and second chances.
The film is scheduled for nationwide cinema release on March 27.
