Skincare has evolved beyond a routine into a lifestyle across many parts of the world, and Nigeria is no exception. With the industry valued at around ₦14 trillion, conversations have shifted toward “skinimalism,” a concept that encourages the use of fewer but more effective products, alongside a growing interest in sustainable and locally sourced solutions suited to Nigerian skin.

From cleansing and moisturizing to sun protection and the treatment of conditions such as acne and hyperpigmentation, skincare has become an important part of self-care, confidence, and, for some, a source of income.

In Nollywood, the celebration of diverse skin tones—particularly melanin-rich skin—remains a defining feature. Many actors and public figures embrace their natural complexion, reflecting an approach that focuses on maintenance and care rather than alteration. Some have also expanded into the skincare space, including Dakore Egbuson-Akande, Adesua Etomi-Wellington, Jemima Osunde, Beverly Naya, and Ini Edo.

However, effective skincare is not one-size-fits-all. It depends on understanding individual skin types and choosing products based on specific needs, which often begins with proper research.

The Nollywood Reporter has compiled a list of essential skincare products that can help support a consistent routine and maintain healthy-looking skin.

Face Wash

Each skincare step has its own unique purpose, but all products work in tandem with each other. The first product is the face wash which is very crucial for deep cleansing, removing dirt, oil, sweat, dead cells and pollutants, preventing clogged pores and acne while maintaining a healthy skin barrier, keeps skin hydrated, and allows products to penetrate effectively.

Before investing in trendy treatments, always remember that a proper cleanse is the essential step in your skincare routine.

Serum

A serum can be described as the secret weapon for treating skin issues like acne, discoloration, dullness or fine lines. If you’re looking to amp up your skin care routine with a product that offers a bigger, more powerful dose of active ingredients than a cleanser, then a face serum may be the next step after cleansing.

It is designed to nourish, protect, and hydrate your skin as a face serum is a great next step after cleansing and before moisturizing. Because there are several types of serum, please do your research before buying.

Toner

A face toner is a liquid solution made to assist tightening pores, cleansing the skin’s surface of dirt and excess oil, and restoring the pH balance of the skin. Depending on how it is made and what chemicals it contains, this liquid treatment may have moisturizing, soothing, or astringent properties.

In the past, toners were recommended to people with oily skin and acne problems because they contained alcohol as an ingredient that dried out the skin. Nowadays, there are several new formulas specifically designed to care for dry and sensitive skin. A well-chosen face toner benefits any skincare routine because this liquid contains ingredients like anti-inflammatory substances and antioxidants to efficiently help the skin be as clear as possible.

Moisturizer

Another vital component of these steps is moisturiser. If you’ve ever wondered how to achieve healthy looking skin, the one product definitely utilised will have been moisturiser because you don’t get suppleness without hydration.

The best way to treat moisturiser is as a sealer. Each step beforehand purifies and nourishes skin, and your moisturiser makes sure that those ingredients alongside vital water are locked in. Without moisturiser, the other products in your routine can exacerbate dryness.

Sunscreen

Sun protection factor (SPF) represents a sunscreen’s ability to protect against a specific portion of ultraviolet (UV) light called UVB. UVB rays are responsible for sunburns and skin cancer. The goal of any sunscreen is to help shield your skin from harm caused by exposure to the sun, like skin cancer and a broad-spectrum formula that helps protect against UVA and UVB rays is essential for all skin types and ethnicities.

No matter what your age or lifestyle, there’s an effective broad spectrum sun protection product for you. However the key for getting the benefits of sunscreen and maintaining healthy skin is applying it as directed which is in the morning. For daily use, a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 is best advisable. If you spend time outdoors, choose a product with SPF 60 or greater.

Extra tip; applying these products, ideally twice a day ensures a refreshed, balanced, and youthful-looking complexion.
