Efunroye: The Unicorn, the latest Nigerian historical epic, has opened with a ₦29.5 million debut at the Nigerian box office, marking a strong start for the period drama in cinemas nationwide.
Per industry analyst, the Nigerian Box office on X, the film grossed this against a lineup of new releases like The Devil Wears Prada (₦57.3M), Animal Farm (₦5.2M), and Segilola (₦5.2M), coming second.
This was despite Michael pulling in ₦130.7 million during its second weekend and dwarfing competitors in the market.
Efunroye: The Unicorn comes courtesy of Fathia Williams (who also doubles as producer and actress) and directed by the trio of Abbey Lanre, Adebayo Tijani and Tope Adebayo Salami. The film tells the rise and peak of 19th-century Yoruba legend Madam Efunroye Tinubu, a merchant, slave trader and kingmaker in Lagos who fought against Britain’s annexation of Lagos in the mid-eighteenth century.
Starting alongside Fathia is Tope Adebayo,, Kamo State, Eniola Ajao, Odunlade Jonathan Adekola, Mercy Aigbe, Ibrahim Yekini, Foluke Daramola, Ibrahim Chatta, Muyiwa Ademola, Saheed Balogun, Femi Adebayo, Femi Branch, Taiwo Hassan, Omowunmi Ajiboye, Yemi Solade, and Taiwo Ibikunle.
