Mortal Kombat II opened with $17 million at the domestic box office, marking the biggest opening day ever for a film in the Mortal Kombat franchise.
The strong debut placed the fantasy action sequel ahead of The Devil Wears Prada 2, which earned $9.8 million on its second Friday in cinemas.
Michael followed in third place with $8.8 million during its third Friday of release.
Mortal Kombat II serves as a sequel to the 2021 film and is the fourth installment in the franchise based on the video game series created by Ed Boon and John Tobias.

Directed by Simon McQuoid, the film stars Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Chin Han, Hiroyuki Sanada, Karl Urban and Tati Gabrielle.
The film’s performance continues the recent box office momentum for video game adaptations following releases such as The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and A Minecraft Movie.
