Disney’s live-action adaptation of Moana is set to premiere in cinemas on July 10, expanding the studio’s growing slate of live-action remakes based on its animated classics.
Inspired by the Oscar-nominated animated film, the adaptation stars Catherine Lagaʻaia as Moana and Dwayne Johnson, who reprises his role as the demigod Maui.

The film follows Moana as she answers the Ocean’s call and journeys beyond the reef surrounding her island of Motunui for the first time. Alongside Maui, she embarks on a voyage aimed at restoring prosperity to her people.
Moana is directed by Thomas Kail in his feature directorial debut from a screenplay written by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller.
Johnson also serves as a producer on the project alongside Beau Flynn, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Mark Mancina, who composed the score for the original animated film and its sequel, returns for the live-action adaptation. Miranda also returns as songwriter for the project.
The upcoming release joins Disney’s slate of live-action remakes including The Little Mermaid (2023), The Lion King (2019) and Aladdin (2019).
Moana will be distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.
