Fatimah Gimsay’s Binta Is Okay has won Best Short Film at the 2026 Blue Unicorn Film Festival (BUFF), which held in Lagos from August 27 to 30.
Produced by Nicole Ofoegbu, the coming-of-age short stars Susan Pwajok, Mallum Arik and Tolu Asanu. The film follows Binta, a young woman navigating the tension between her faith and her desire to understand her body, while trying to maintain her relationship with her conservative mother.
Speaking exclusively to The Nollywood Reporter, Gimsay described Binta Is Okay as “a mini coming-of-age story about a girl trying to understand her body, her faith and her relationship with her mother.”
The filmmaker said the team is currently prioritising festival screenings to assess the film’s reception and reach before deciding on a wider public release.
“It’s been fun watching the film with an audience,” Gimsay said. “Their reactions have been validating for us because we also know the film is slightly quirky and unhinged in its own way.”
The Best Short Film award adds to the film’s festival run, with Gimsay now looking to continue its screenings before determining its next release window.
