Editorial Standards

Editorial principles

The Nollywood Reporter (TNR) is committed to accurate, fair, independent, transparent, and responsible journalism. Our mission is to provide credible reporting, criticism, analysis, interviews, and commentary about Nollywood, Nigerian and African entertainment, culture, and the wider creative industries.

Our editorial decisions are guided by the following principles:

Accuracy

We make reasonable efforts to ensure that information published by TNR is accurate, relevant, and properly contextualized. Reporters and editors are expected to verify important facts and distinguish confirmed information from allegations, speculation, opinion, or unverified claims.

When an error is identified, TNR will correct it in accordance with our Corrections Policy.

Fairness and Context

TNR seeks to present information fairly and in appropriate context. When reporting allegations or matters that could materially affect a person's reputation, we make reasonable efforts to seek responses from relevant individuals or organizations and to represent significant perspectives accurately.

Fairness does not require every article to give equal weight to every position. Editorial judgment determines which perspectives are relevant and supported by credible evidence.

Independence

TNR maintains editorial independence from advertisers, sponsors, public-relations agencies, entertainment companies, political organizations, and other commercial or external interests.

Advertising and sponsorship do not determine editorial coverage, news judgments, reviews, ratings, or criticism.

Transparency

TNR seeks to be transparent about the origins of information, significant corrections, conflicts of interest, sponsored material, and the use of artificial intelligence or other technologies when disclosure is appropriate.

Accountability

TNR takes responsibility for the journalism it publishes. Readers are encouraged to notify us when they believe an article contains a factual error, misleading information, attribution problem, or other significant editorial concern.

Public Interest

TNR considers the public interest when determining whether information should be published. Entertainment journalism can involve matters of legitimate public interest, including industry practices, labor, business, representation, cultural influence, public institutions, and issues affecting audiences and creative professionals.

Respect and Human Dignity

TNR does not intentionally publish material that is discriminatory, demeaning, needlessly invasive, or exploitative. Coverage of sensitive subjects should be handled with appropriate context and care.

Editorial Judgment

These standards provide principles rather than a rigid formula for every editorial decision. Editors may make reasonable judgments based on the circumstances of a story, provided those judgments remain consistent with TNR's commitments to accuracy, fairness, independence, transparency, and accountability.

1. Corrections Policy

The Nollywood Reporter is committed to correcting significant factual errors promptly and transparently.

When TNR identifies a substantive error, we will correct the information and, where appropriate, acknowledge the correction within the article. Corrections may include errors involving names, dates, locations, quotations, statistics, credits, titles, financial information, or other material facts.

Minor typographical, grammatical, formatting, or stylistic errors may be corrected without a formal correction notice when they do not materially alter the meaning of the article.

Corrections do not ordinarily remove an article from the website. Where an error substantially affects the integrity or meaning of an article, TNR may publish an editor's note or take additional corrective action.

Readers who identify a possible error may contact TNR through the editorial contact information provided on the website. Correction requests should identify the specific claim in question and, where possible, provide reliable evidence supporting the requested correction.

TNR does not change accurate editorial content merely because a subject, source, advertiser, publicist, or other interested party disagrees with its conclusions.

Send a correction request to newsroom@thenollywoodreporter.com.

2. Ethics Policy

TNR's journalism is guided by accuracy, fairness, independence, accountability, respect for individuals, and service to the public interest.

Journalists and contributors should:

  • Verify significant information before publication.
  • Identify information obtained from credible sources.
  • Avoid plagiarism and misrepresentation.
  • Distinguish fact from opinion, analysis, rumor, and speculation.
  • Give subjects a reasonable opportunity to respond when reporting significant allegations about them.
  • Avoid knowingly publishing false or misleading information.
  • Avoid unnecessary invasions of privacy.
  • Treat vulnerable individuals and sensitive subjects with appropriate care.
  • Avoid discriminatory or prejudicial language unless its use is editorially justified.
  • Disclose relevant conflicts of interest.
  • Reject payments, gifts, favors, or benefits that could improperly influence editorial judgment.
  • Respect copyright and intellectual-property rights.
  • Correct significant errors promptly.

TNR recognizes that entertainment journalism frequently involves publicity material, press releases, promotional events, interviews, premieres, screenings, complimentary access, and other industry relationships. Participation in such activities does not entitle a source, publicist, studio, label, producer, artist, or advertiser to favorable coverage.

3. Source and Attribution Policy

TNR seeks to identify the sources of information used in its journalism whenever doing so is appropriate and possible.

Information obtained from another publication, news organization, government agency, research institution, company, interview, press release, social-media post, public record, or other source should be appropriately attributed.

TNR does not present another organization's reporting as original TNR reporting.

When TNR relies substantially on reporting first published elsewhere, the original source should be clearly identified. When appropriate, TNR may link to the original report or relevant primary source.

Press releases and statements supplied by public-relations representatives may be used as sources, but they should not automatically be presented as independently verified reporting.

Anonymous sources may be used when the information is significant and the source has a legitimate reason for requiring confidentiality. Editors should assess the reliability and motivation of anonymous sources before publication.

Social-media posts may be cited when they constitute relevant primary-source material, but the existence of a social-media post does not by itself establish that the information contained in it is true.

Where practical, TNR prioritizes primary sources, including direct interviews, official records, court documents, company statements, original research, official statistics, and direct observation.

4. AI-Generated-Content Policy

TNR recognizes that artificial intelligence can assist journalists and editors with research, transcription, translation, organization, brainstorming, accessibility, and other newsroom functions. However, AI does not replace editorial responsibility.

Human journalists and editors remain responsible for all material published by TNR.

AI-generated or AI-assisted material must be reviewed and fact-checked before publication. TNR will not knowingly publish fabricated quotations, invented sources, fictional events, false statistics, or other information generated by AI without verification.

AI tools should not be used to impersonate individuals or manufacture statements attributed to real people.

AI-generated images, video, audio, or other synthetic media must not be presented as authentic documentary material. When synthetic or substantially AI-generated visual or audio material is published, TNR will provide an appropriate disclosure.

TNR may use AI tools for limited editorial purposes, including transcription, translation assistance, research organization, headline brainstorming, grammar assistance, and other production tasks. Such use does not transfer editorial responsibility to the technology.

Journalists must exercise particular caution when using AI to summarize sources, identify facts, translate material, or conduct research because AI systems can produce inaccurate or fabricated information.

TNR may disclose significant AI assistance when the nature of that assistance would be relevant to a reader's understanding of the material.

5. Conflict-of-Interest Policy

TNR expects journalists, editors, contributors, and other editorial personnel to avoid conflicts of interest that could compromise, or reasonably appear to compromise, editorial independence.

Editorial personnel should disclose relevant personal, financial, professional, family, or other relationships that could influence coverage.

A journalist should not ordinarily report on an individual, organization, production, company, product, or project in which the journalist has a significant personal or financial interest.

Employees and contributors should not accept money, gifts, services, employment opportunities, or other benefits in exchange for favorable coverage or editorial treatment.

Attendance at industry events, screenings, premieres, press conferences, festivals, and similar activities does not constitute a conflict of interest by itself.

Where a potential conflict cannot reasonably be avoided, TNR may disclose the conflict to readers and assign the story to another journalist or editor when appropriate.

Advertisers, sponsors, publicists, studios, record labels, producers, artists, agencies, and other commercial partners do not have the right to determine TNR's editorial conclusions.

TNR distinguishes editorial content from advertising, sponsored content, branded content, and other paid communications.

Sponsored or paid material will be clearly identified so that readers can distinguish it from independent editorial journalism.

Advertisers and sponsors may purchase advertising or sponsored opportunities, but payment does not guarantee positive editorial coverage.

Sponsored content may be produced by TNR, a client, an agency, or another designated content producer. Its commercial nature should remain clear to readers regardless of who produces it.

TNR will not intentionally present paid promotional material as independent news reporting.

Sponsored content should comply with applicable laws and regulations and should not contain knowingly false or materially misleading claims.

A company, artist, film, television program, music release, event, or other commercial entity may advertise with TNR while receiving independent editorial coverage. Advertising relationships do not determine whether or how an entity is covered editorially.

7. Opinion and Commentary

TNR distinguishes opinion, commentary, criticism, analysis, and advocacy from straight news reporting.

Articles expressing the views or arguments of the author should be clearly identified through appropriate labels such as Opinion, Commentary, Column, Analysis, or Criticism, depending on the nature of the material.

Opinion writers and columnists may express strong views. However, opinions should be based on identifiable facts, reasoned analysis, experience, or clearly identified arguments.

TNR does not require opinion writers to present every possible perspective equally. However, writers should not knowingly misrepresent facts or present unsupported assertions as established fact.

News reports should not be presented as opinion, and opinion should not be presented as neutral reporting.

Film, television, music, theater, and cultural criticism represents the critic's informed editorial judgment. Reviews may be subjective while remaining grounded in the work being reviewed and the critic's stated reasoning.

8. Photo-Credit Standards

TNR seeks to properly identify and credit photographs and other visual materials used in its journalism.

Where a photograph is supplied by a photographer, studio, production company, record label, publicist, agency, wire service, organization, or other source, TNR will provide an appropriate credit whenever the source and licensing terms require or permit attribution.

Photo credits should identify the photographer or rights holder where that information is available and appropriate.

TNR will not knowingly represent another person's photograph as an original TNR photograph.

Images obtained through licensed services, press kits, official promotional materials, public archives, or other authorized sources should be used in accordance with applicable licensing and usage terms.

Where an image is substantially altered, composited, digitally created, or generated using artificial intelligence, appropriate disclosure should be provided when the alteration could affect a reader's understanding of the image.

Photographs used to illustrate editorial stories should, where practical, accurately represent the subject and context of the story. Images should not be manipulated in a misleading manner.

If TNR discovers that an image has been incorrectly credited or used without appropriate authorization, the publication will investigate and take appropriate corrective action, which may include correcting the credit, replacing the image, removing the image, or acknowledging the error.

Editorial Accountability

The Nollywood Reporter believes that trust is earned through consistent accuracy, transparency, independence, and accountability.

Our readers should be able to distinguish between journalism, opinion, criticism, advertising, sponsored content, and promotional material. They should also be able to understand, as far as reasonably possible, where important information comes from and how TNR handles mistakes.

These standards apply to TNR's editorial operations across its website, digital publications, video, audio, social-media content, newsletters, and other editorial platforms, subject to the particular characteristics of each medium.

Because journalism operates in a changing technological, legal, cultural, and media environment, TNR may periodically review and update these standards. Material changes will be reflected in the version published on this page.

Questions, correction requests, attribution concerns, or ethical complaints may be directed to TNR's editorial team through the contact information published on the website.

The Nollywood Reporter is committed to journalism that informs, challenges, documents, and serves its readers while respecting the people and communities it covers.
