A collaboration between MTV Staying Alive Foundation, Paramount Global, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has blossomed into the creation of “In Bloom,” a five-part anthology series amplifying the voices of women from diverse backgrounds.
Spanning across Nigeria, the UK, Kenya, India, and Brazil, “In Bloom” brings together the talents of five directors, each telling a distinctive narrative that transcends borders and resonates with the universal experiences of women.
The anthology unfolds through five short films, each telling the stories of different characters, their circumstances, and the pivotal choices they face. Tackling sensitive themes affecting womanhood in contemporary society, the series delves into period poverty, child marriage, gender-based violence, HIV self-stigma, family planning, and women’s economic empowerment.
“Period,” directed by Nicole Teeny, introduces viewers to Yasmina El-Abd, a character whose resilience challenges societal norms. “Alta,” directed by Priyanka Banerjee, follows the journey of Mazel Vyas as she confronts child marriage, navigating the complexities of love, tradition, and rebellion.
“Maré,” directed by Giuliana Monteiro, shares the story of Vanessa Giácomo, a woman whose indomitable spirit refuses to be extinguished. “Kifungo,” directed by Voline Ogutu, follows Brenda Wairimu’s path to self-acceptance and living with HIV, while “Aféfé,” directed by Dolapo ‘LowlaDee’ Adeleke, showcases the entrepreneurial spirit of Folu Storms.
This anthology promises to be an exploration of women’s lives, resonating with audiences globally. “In Bloom” premiered on Paramount plus worldwide on March 1 and it will screen on BET Africa on March 8, 2024
