“Breath of Life” Leads 2024 AMVCA Winners With Five Major Prizes

“Breath of Life,” the 2023 Nigerian drama film, emerged as the top winner at the 2024 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, claiming five major accolades including Best Movie.

The Amazon Prime Video original, executively produced by BB Sasore and Derin Adeyokunnu, which was written and directed by Sasore, won Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Lead Actor, Best Director, and the marquee Best Movie award.

While “Breath of Life” exceeded expectations with its sweeping wins, some other films with multiple nominations failed to convert them into major AMVCA trophies.

“Over the Bridge,” which led the field with 12 total nods, only secured two wins on the night. The critically-lauded “Mami Wata,” nominated 11 times, took home just one award for Best Makeup.

Additionally, the record-breaking box office hit “A Tribe Called Judah” and Kayode Kasum’s “Afamefuna” did not win any of the categories they were nominated in, despite strong expectations.

The winners for “Breath of Life” included Wale Ojo for Best Lead Actor, and Genoveva Umeh and Chimezie Imo, who won Best Supporting Actress and the Trailblazer award, respectively.

While “Breath of Life” celebrated its multiple wins, the results contrasted with the number of nominations garnered by some other films like “Over the Bridge,” “Mami Wata,” “A Tribe Called Judah” and “Afamefuna”
