The three-minute and ten-second trailer, which debuted on July 9, offers fans a first look at Denzel Washington in his new role as a wealthy slave-turned-merchant and arms dealer who now operates a stable of gladiators.
At the center of the story is Lucius Verus, played by Oscar-nominee Paul Mescal, the former heir to the Empire who is captured from his home and brought to Rome to fight as a gladiator in a shark and rhino-infested colosseum.
Pedro Pascal also appears in the trailer as Roman general Marcus Acacius, trained under the sword of Maximus – the hero of the first film – and who seems to care about the lives of gladiators.
Starring alongside Washington, Mescal, and Pascal are Connie Nielsen as Lucius’ mother, Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger as twin emperors Geta and Caracalla, Derek Jacobi, Alexander Karim, Rory McCann, and Tim McInerny.
Fresh from “Napoleon” – another historical epic – director Ridley Scott returns to helm this movie, 24 years after he and Russell Crowe wowed audiences with “Gladiator.” The 2000 film grossed $465 million and clinched five Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Crowe.
Despite some reservations about the trailer’s soundtrack –“No Church in the Wild” by Jay-Z and Kanye West – and questions about the sequel’s potential to match the original, the general consensus seems to be one of anticipation and excitement.
With its stunning visuals, intense action sequences, and a talented cast, “Gladiator II” aims to remind the world that no one does epics quite like Ridley Scott. Whether he will deliver on his promises remains to be seen.
“Gladiator II” is set to be released in November 2024. Watch the trailer here.
