The release of Netflix’s trailer for its upcoming animated movie “Spellbound” has ignited a wave of criticism, with viewers raising concerns about the film’s producer, creative direction and marketing approach.
Many commentators on Netflix’s social media platforms took issue with the trailer’s promotion of producer John Lasseter’s previous works, given the sexual misconduct allegations that led to his departure from Pixar. Lasseter, now head of animation at Skydance Animation, faced backlash for his involvement in the project.
“No, Netflix, listing a bunch of Pixar titles in the trailer isn’t going to make us forget why John Lasseter no longer works there,” one user wrote.
Critics also pointed out perceived similarities between “Spellbound” and Disney’s “Brave,” noting a shared storyline involving “people changing into monsters after an encounter in a forest.” This has led to accusations of a lack of originality.
The trailer’s musical choices drew additional criticism. Some viewers expressed fatigue over the use of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin'” in yet another film, while others questioned why the trailer doesn’t highlight the movie’s musical elements, despite featuring work by renowned composer Alan Menken.
“Even animated movies are now embarrassed to advertise they’re animated?” one commenter asked, suggesting the trailer should have emphasized Menken’s involvement as it did Lasseter’s past accomplishments.
“Spellbound,” set for worldwide release on Netflix on Nov. 22, marks Skydance’s debut on the streaming platform and Lasseter’s second project since joining the company.
The controversy surrounding the trailer highlights ongoing debates in the animation industry about accountability, creative originality and marketing strategies in an increasingly competitive streaming landscape.
