Veteran Nollywood actor Wale Ojo is set to make his second foray into directing with the upcoming film “This Is Not a Nollywood Movie,” a satirical comedy that promises to challenge perceptions of the Nigerian film industry, just as the title reads.
Ojo, fresh off his Best Lead Actor win at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) for “Breath of Life,” announced the project via Instagram on August 17, 2024.
“This explosive comedy promises to find its way to your hearts through joy and laughter,” Ojo said in a video post. “Don’t be fooled by the title – it’s tongue-in-cheek, it’s all about laughs. I believe laughter is an orgasm of the heart, and that is the purpose and aim of this film.”
The cast features an eclectic mix of talent, including veteran actor Hanks Anuku, Ghanaian social media personality Shatta Bandle, comedian Broda Shaggi, and former Big Brother Naija contestant Boma Akpore.
Ojo’s transition to directing comes after a long and successful acting career that began in the UK. He gained prominence in Nigeria with roles in films like “Phone Swap” and the comedy series “Meet the Adebanjos.”
Beyond his on-screen work, Ojo is known for founding the New Nigeria Cinema project, an initiative aimed at elevating the quality and international appeal of Nigerian films.
“This Is Not a Nollywood Movie” marks Ojo’s second directorial effort, though details about his debut project were not immediately available. The film’s provocative title suggests a potential commentary on the state of Nigerian cinema and its global perception.
Production dates and a release timeline for the film have not yet been announced.
