A24, the studio known for its unique approach to horror, is set to release its latest film, “Y2K,” a dark comedy that taps into the fears and anxieties of the turn of the millennium.
The film stars Rachel Zegler, Jaede Martel, and The Kid Laroi, who play high school juniors navigating a New Year’s Eve party in 1999 that takes a disastrous turn when the Y2K bug triggers a series of tech malfunctions. What starts as a night of celebration quickly spirals into chaos as the characters face off against rogue electronic devices intent on wiping out humanity.
Directed by Kyle Mooney in his feature film debut, “Y2K” is a blend of horror and humor that captures the nostalgia of the late 1990s, complete with iconic era details like VHS tapes and Tamagotchis. The film’s trailer promises a thrilling ride, combining the looming dread of technological collapse with the ridiculousness of outdated fears.
Zegler, Martel, and The Kid Laroi lead a cast that also includes Julian Dennison, Fred Durst, Mason Gooding, Alicia Silverstone, and Mooney himself.
Mooney, known for his work on “Saturday Night Live,” co-wrote the script with Evan Winter, bringing his signature comedic touch to the film.
The project is further bolstered by the involvement of Jonah Hill and Christopher Storer as co-producers, with acclaimed cinematographer Bill Pope handling the visuals. Pope, has also worked on films like “Spider-Man 2”
