Most times, songs are more than just random lyrics laced with jumpy beats or strings. They can reveal a deeper story if you listen closely enough.
Take Spyro and Suave’s “My Pledge” as an example. The three-minute track, released in late July, features lines like “…I will never ever fornicate again / No go ever leave you I go stay, Ajeh…” —lyrics that, at first glance, seemed to drop subtle hints and nothing more. Until now.
In early September, Spyro (real name Oludipe David) dropped a bombshell that appeared to confirm what his fans had suspected: the song was deeply personal.
Captioned on a promo video of the song on Instagram was the singer’s confession: he was no longer comfortable with pre-marital sex.
The caption read: Sex felt good till I could no longer bear struggling with my conscience…every time I ‘FORNICATED,’ knowing I ain’t married to the person, I feel troubled, like a part of me gets taken right after.”
Further exploring his life-changing decision in his song “My Pledge” where he talks about reserving his bed for one person in the future, the “Who’s Your Guy” crooner candidly admits that it wasn’t an easy journey and that he found strength through prayer to fight these inner battles.
Fans congratulated him on his new-found resolve. One Darlington Mide wrote: “the stories behind your songs are what makes it special. I pray make I get your kind of will power unto that level. I never strong reach at all”
Another fan, Ify Andrew, said, “We love you Spyro. Thank you for representing the Kingdom well!!!”
Nana Dadi echoed, “Watch how God is going to change your life!!! There’s power in celibacy”
As for his crush, the ex-BBN-star Nengi, Spyro admits that “that one go hard.” The singer has previously revealed that Nengi is the only female celebrity he would avoid being alone in a room with.
Whether he would make good on his pledge in the face of temptation remains to be seen. But at least, we can confirm what we feared “My Pledge” was truly about—an anthem of purity and personal values.
