This December promises an exciting lineup of highly anticipated Nollywood films, as beloved filmmakers such as Funke Akindele, Toyin Abraham, and Mercy Aigbe prepare to release their latest projects, aiming to dominate the festive box office.
Funke Akindele returns with a fresh take on her beloved “Jenifa” franchise with the rebranded series “Everybody Loves Jenifa”, set to premiere on December 13, 2024. The original show, “Jenifa’s Diary”, has been a fan favorite since its debut in 2015, following the comedic adventures of the naïve and funny Jenifa. Akindele’s announcement has created buzz, with fans eager to see what this new iteration will bring.
Toyin Abraham is also bringing back her much-loved “Alakada” series with the latest sequel, “Alakada! Bad and Boujee”. Set for a December release, this will be the fifth film in the comedy franchise, continuing the story of Yetunde, a young girl who lies about her financial and social status to fit in. The “Alakada” series has been a hit since 2009, with each installment further cementing Abraham’s status as a box office powerhouse.
Another major contender for December’s box office is “Thin Line”, the latest production from Mercy Aigbe. Following the success of her previous film “Ada Omo Daddy” last year, Aigbe’s new project is shrouded in mystery, with few details about the plot and cast. However, the film, produced by Aigbe and executive produced by Kazeem Adeoti, is expected to be a strong competitor during the holiday season.
Also joining the December race is “The Waiter”, directed by Toka McBaror and produced by Ayo Makun. Though full details of the film have yet to be revealed, behind-the-scenes footage hints at a star-studded cast including Regina Daniels, Deyemi Okanlawon, Rahama Sadau, Brain Jotter, and Williams Uchemba. The film, set for release in December 2024, is another addition to what promises to be a fiercely competitive month for Nigerian cinema.
With the holiday season traditionally being the most competitive time for the Nigerian box office, top filmmakers like Funke Akindele, Toyin Abraham, and Mercy Aigbe are leading the charge.
Following the one-billion-naira box office record set by Akindele in 2023, anticipation for this year’s releases has been building throughout the year.
As December draws nearer, these filmmakers are gearing up for another successful holiday season, solidifying their positions as leading forces in Nollywood.
