Aaron Pierre, known for his role in Netflix’s Rebel Ridge, has been cast as John Stewart in HBO’s highly anticipated Lanterns series, bringing one of DC’s first Black superheroes to life.
The news was announced by DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn, who seemed satisfied with the choice when he exclaimed “…I am absolutely sure we’ve found an incredible John Stewart.”
The 30-year-old actor will share the screen with Kyle Chandler, who will portray Hal Jordan, another prominent figure in the Green Lantern universe
According to Deadline Pierre narrowly edged out Homecoming star Stephan James for the role after an extensive casting process.
While Pierre is the latest addition to the Green Lantern Corps, he is not the first casting reveal. Nathan Fillion has already been confirmed as Guy Gardner for the upcoming 2025 film” Superman”.
Pierre’s casting has received largely positive reactions, though some fans have raised concerns over the casting of a lighter-skinned actor for the traditionally darker-skinned John Stewart.
One fan on X voiced disappointment, noting: “…I’m a little disappointed that a traditionally darker-skinned DC character is light washed…Hollywood + colorism is still a blindspot, but many aren’t ready for that conversation”.
Despite these concerns, Pierre’s growing reputation in the industry is expected to dispel doubts about his ability to take on the role.
Lanterns, co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, follows John Stewart, a new recruit, and veteran Hal Jordan as they tackle a murder mystery rooted on Earth.
Originally slated as a Max original, the eight-episode series will now debut on HBO as part of a restructured content strategy.
A release date for the series has not yet been announced.
