After months of built-up anticipation, the full-length trailer of “Creature Commandos” has been revealed.
Written and directed by James Gunn—DC Films creative head—the animated series will stream on Max in December 2024 and is set be the first fruit of the rebranded DC Universe banner.
The trailer promises a storyline and gore reminiscent of the previous “Suicide Squad” films. It also introduces a team of non-human prisoners—The Bride, Nina Mazursky, G.I. Robot, Weasel, and Doctor Phosphorus—recruited by Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller and led by Rick Flag Sr.
However, the series’ similarity to the Suicide Squad lore has opened an old wound of a faction of the DC fanbase.
Fans of DC film, “Suicide Squad,” have resumed demands for the release of the uncut version of director David Ayer’s true vision—now referred to as the “Ayer Cut”. #ReleasetheAyercut hashtags have been bombarded on social media following “Creature Commandos” trailer.
The 2016 superhero movie which released under the now-defunct DC Extended Universe underwent substantial creative changes during its production, due to studio tampering.
Negative reception of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” led Warner Bros. executives to completely substitute or alter many of the original scenes shot by the director that were considered too dark.
Although the movie was a commercial success, hauling $746 million at the box office in 2016, it was panned by both critics and audiences.
James Gunn’s soft reboot, “The Suicide Squad” (2021), which was met with much better reviews, combined with the subsequent scrapping of the DCEU has all but delivered the killer blow to any hopes of David Ayer’s cut ever seeing the light of day.
Regardless, this reality, and release of the “Creature Commandos” trailer, didn’t stop the Ayer faithful from growing their calls to restore his original vision.
