Disney’s “Moana 2” has set a new benchmark in Nigeria’s box office history with an impressive ₦106.4 million gross over its five-day debut.
This includes ₦81 million earned during its three-day weekend release and an additional ₦25 million from advanced screenings.
The sequel to the 2016 animated hit not only dominated the weekend box office but also broke the record for the biggest animation opening in Nigeria. Previously held by “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” with ₦28.4 million in June 2023, “Moana 2” surpassed it by a significant margin, cementing its status as a major crowd-puller.
According to Nigerian Box Office data on X, “Moana 2” led a robust box office weekend from November 29 to December 1, 2024, which saw a cumulative gross of over ₦184.5 million. Other notable contributors included “Gladiator II” with ₦44.5 million, “A Ghetto Love Story” at ₦18.3 million, and “Wicked” with ₦12.9 million.
This marks the third-highest-grossing weekend of 2024, trailing only the weekends of January 5–7 (₦242.8 million) and July 26–28 (₦202.5 million).
“Moana 2” is also on track to rival the admissions of 2019’s “Frozen II” in Nigeria. Its global appeal is further reflected in its U.S. box office performance, where it debuted with a five-day domestic gross of $221 million. If the momentum continues, “Moana 2” could surpass “Frozen II” both locally and internationally.
The strong start for “Moana 2” signals a continued appetite for high-quality animated films in Nigeria and solidifies Disney’s dominance in the animation market.
