Osikoya Damilola’s debut feature records modest earnings amid competition from anime and Nollywood titles.
“A Weekend Fiasco” Struggles in First Box Office Outing
Osikoya Damilola’s A Weekend Fiasco began its theatrical run with modest results at the Nigerian box office, as the film faced strong competition from international anime releases and established local productions.
Released on September 5, the drama-comedy produced by Osikoya Damilola opened with ₦10.3 million over its first three days; ₦2.8 million each on Friday and Saturday and ₦4.6 million on Sunday according to data from the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN).
In its second weekend, the film slid 34% to ₦6.7 million, bringing its two-week total to ₦25.4 million.
For fledgling production company Switch Visuals, the modest numbers are perhaps less surprising given the competition. Anime juggernaut Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle stormed Nigerian cinemas with ₦105 million, while The Long Walk also made a strong debut.
Directed by Samuel “Bigsam” Olatunji and written by Rita Onwurah (with contributions from Kehinde Joseph, Shola Thompson, and Stephen Okonkwo), A Weekend Fiasco follows a weary wife whose planned weekend escape with a would-be lover quickly unravels into chaos when familiar faces resurface.
The film stars Ini Edo, Alex Ekubo, Yvonne Jegede, Odunlade Adekola, Chimezie Imo, Waje, Liquorose, Ilebaye, and Lizzy Jay.
