James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash has launched pre-sales in China. the world’s second-largest movie market with an encouraging start, according to industry reports.
With its official opening set for Friday, December 19 James Cameron’s third Avatar film has already amassed a $3.8 million two-day pre-sales cumulative total for the December 17–21 preview sales period, with four days of sales still remaining. Day 2 alone had approximately 96,000 screenings open for booking.
This places the film as the second-biggest Hollywood pre-sale performer of the year in China; only Zootopia has more.
The current pre-sales breakdown includes $175,000 from Wednesday early screenings, $450,000 from Thursday previews, $1.3 million for Friday opening day, another $1.3 million projected for Saturday, and $515,000 for Sunday, according to industry analyst Luiz Fernando.
He, and other analysts expect Avatar: Fire and Ash to exceed The Way of Water’s $57.1 million opening weekend, provided momentum holds and word-of-mouth from early screenings proves favorable.
At its current pace, Fire and Ash could finish its full pre-sales period north of $10 million, potentially the biggest for a Hollywood live-action film in China since 2022. Such a result would place the film on track to challenge Godzilla vs. Kong’s $69.2 million opening weekend.
