Brad Pitt’s new racing drama “F1: The Movie” exceeded expectations with a $144 million global debut, marking the strongest opening for an Apple original film.

Distributed by Warner Bros. and financed by Apple, the film earned $55.6 million in North America and $88.4 million across 78 international markets in its opening weekend, according to Variety.

The performance sets multiple records: it is the biggest opening weekend for a racing film outside of the “Fast & Furious” and “Cars” franchises, and Apple’s most commercially successful theatrical release, surpassing titles like ‘‘Napoleon” and “Red One.”

It is also Brad Pitt’s second-highest opening weekend as a lead actor, trailing only “World War Z” ($66.4 million).

Internationally, “F1: The Movie” saw its strongest earnings from the United Kingdom ($9.2 million), China ($9 million), Mexico ($6.7 million), France ($5.4 million), and Australia ($5 million).

Directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick), the film stars Pitt as a retired Formula One driver who returns to the track to mentor a rising star, played by Damson Idris, while trying to save a struggling team.

While “F1: The Movie” is off to a strong theatrical start, Apple’s long-term focus is on streaming. The company retains exclusive streaming rights on Apple TV+, while Warner Bros. is responsible for theatrical distribution and marketing.

The film’s reported $200 million budget was covered entirely by Apple, with Warner Bros. aiming to recoup its costs through global box office revenue.
