It surpasses the ₦108 million debut of “Captain America: Brave New World.”
“Superman” Scores Year’s Biggest Opening Weekend in Nigeria With ₦133 Million
“Superman” flew into Nigerian cinemas on July 11 with impressive numbers.
The first film in the new DC Universe franchise debuted with ₦111.9 million between July 11 and 13, excluding an additional ₦21.1 million from weekday previews.
Not only did it top the Nigerian box office, it also accounted for more than 60% of all weekend earnings.
“Superman” now holds the highest debut of 2025 for any film in Nigeria, surpassing the ₦108 million recorded by Captain America: Brave New World in February.
The film’s performance is particularly notable considering that Lagos audiences—who contribute more than half of all box office ticket sales were restricted from cinemas for much of Saturday due to local elections.
Globally, “Superman” delivered a $217 million opening, with $122 million from North America alone. It’s the highest-ever debut for a Superman solo film and the second-highest for a Superman feature after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

With a strong Rotten Tomatoes score and positive word-of-mouth, the film’s second-weekend hold is expected to remain solid.
Written, directed, and produced by James Gunn, Superman stars David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, and Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific, among others.
