“Thunderbolts*” has arrived in Nigerian cinemas, debuting with a total of ₦74 million at the box office, an impressive figure for the final film of Marvel’s Phase 5.
It earned ₦62.8 million over the weekend and an additional ₦11.2 million from Thursday pre-sale tickets.
Released on May 2, 2025, the film places at No. 3 at the box office- a surprising result for a Marvel film as they tend to be crowd-pleasers, drawing in enough attraction to secure the first or second spot.
“Thunderbolts*” earned $160. 4 million at the global box office from a combined total of $74.3 million at the domestic level and $86.1 million at the international level. This ranks the film as the eighth highest-grossing film of 2025 so far. While it met domestic projections of $70–$75 million, it fell slightly short of global expectations, which ranged between $160–$175 million—raising questions about what might have gone wrong internationally.
Blocking the film’s rise to glory is the Ryan Coogler cinematic masterpiece “Sinners” which continues to dominate in its third week. The film has grossed a whopping ₦445.9 million in Nigeria and $240. 4 million worldwide.
With these numbers, the vampire-horror epic is on track to surpass the billion-naira mark within a month, solidifying its reign as the No. 1 film in the world.
At No. 2 is “Ori: The Rebirth,” the Nollywood dark horse that has shattered critical and commercial expectations, both with its advanced screening numbers and its box office debut of ₦97.8 million.
The film is the top Nollywood title for the weekend of May 2–4, 2025, and now holds the record for the strongest May opening in Nigerian box office history.
