The romantic comedy follows how an ambitious American student falls hard for her British teacher.
A Surreptitious Relationship Blooms in Netflix’s “My Oxford Year”
Sofia Carson is steadily cementing her place as Netflix’s new queen of romcoms. After “Purple Hearts” and “The Life List,” she’s back again as the lead in the streaming platform’s new film “My Oxford Year,” which premieres August 1, 2025.
Based on the debut novel of the same name by Julia Whelan, the film follows an ambitious American student who lands the opportunity of a lifetime to study at her dream school—Oxford University. She’s planned her entire life since she was thirteen, but the one thing she never planned for during her year-long stay at Oxford is to fall in love—and with her English professor, no less.
The film stars Carson alongside her co-lead Corey Mylchreest, as the student and professor respectively, who embark on a surreptitious romance for the history books. It also features Dougray Scott, Catherine McCormack, Harry Trevaldwyn, Hugh Coles, Poppy Gilbert, and Barney Harris.
“My Oxford Year” is directed by Iain Morris and produced by Laura Quicksilver and George Berman of Temple Hill Entertainment, alongside Presque Isle Films. Allison Burnett penned the script with obvious inspiration from the novel, but it might not stay completely faithful to the source material. Fans of the novel will have to watch for the variations—and see whether it gets a pass or is dragged on social media.
