The former Big Brother Naija director explores mystery and African mythology in his first feature film
Gbenga Kayode, known for his work directing the hit reality series Big Brother Naija, is set to make his Nollywood directorial debut with the upcoming mystery film “Bendel Girl,” which opens in cinemas across Nigeria on July 18, 2025.
Set in rural Nigeria, the film draws heavily on African mythology and supernatural elements. It follows the story of Theresa, a teenage girl who reappears on a remote highway in 2024, nearly 40 years after vanishing into a forest in 1985.
Found by three young adults; Dave, Osas, and Erika, Theresa insists she’s from the past, setting off a chain of strange and disturbing events.
As the trio unravels the mystery, they uncover long-buried secrets, strange connections, and a prophecy that forces each of them to confront deeply personal choices.
The film features a blend of familiar and emerging faces, including Big Brother Naija alumni Saskay Jonah and Tolani Baj, AMVCA winner Tobi Bakare, Nollywood veteran Jibola Dabo, and actors Tope Tedela, Timi Agbaje, Amanda Iriekpen, Fosudo Olusola, Richard Brutus, Kate Adepegba, and Kayode Olaiya.
Written, directed, and co-produced by Kayode, “Bendel Girl” represents a significant shift from his reality TV background to narrative filmmaking. He shares producing credits with Asake Oloyede.
The film will be distributed by Blue Pictures.
