“American Japa,” a new Nollywood film featuring an ensemble cast of Nigerian cinema heavyweights, is slated for nationwide theatrical release on September 6, 2024.
Directed by Tony Abulu, the movie explores the phenomenon of “japa” – a Yoruba term for emigration – through the story of commercial sex workers aspiring to relocate to the United States in search of better opportunities.
Odunlade Adekola, who stars in the film, shared the trailer on social media, announcing a premiere at Film House The Palms Mall on August 30, ahead of the wider release.
The cast boasts a lineup of prominent Nollywood figures, including Toyin Abraham, Kanayo O Kanayo, Bolanle Ninalowo, Segun Arinze, and Yemi Blaq. Veteran actors Jide Kosoko and Ronke Oshodi Oke also feature alongside Nollywood actress like Wumi Toriola and Jumoke Odetola.
“American Japa” is a production of Atlantic World Digital Communications, with Abulu, a Nigerian-born U.S.-based filmmaker, serving as both director and producer. Angel Ufuoma co-produces the project.
As Nigeria grapples with economic challenges and increased emigration, particularly among young professionals, “American Japa” promises to offer a unique perspective on a timely and contentious issue through the lens of commercial sex workers’ aspirations.
The film’s release comes at a time when the “japa” trend has become a significant topic of discussion in Nigerian society, potentially sparking further debate on the causes and consequences of emigration.
