As Big Brother Naija prepares for a milestone season, pressure mounts to restore its former dominance.
As anticipation builds for Big Brother Naija Season 10, themed “Certified”, the reality franchise faces a pivotal moment in its history.
The season will premiere with a double launch on July 26 and 27, 2025, across DStv and GOtv platforms. While excitement simmers, so do critical questions about the show’s recent decline in content quality and fan engagement.
Once the undisputed giant of African reality TV, BBNaija captivated millions with its compelling drama, viral moments, and unforgettable housemates. But in recent years, the magic seems to have faded. Loyal fans say recent seasons lack the authentic tension and personality that once defined the show.
Manufactured Drama, Forced Romance
The core of the criticism lies in the perceived inauthenticity. Drama now feels scripted, while romantic pairings seem more performative than genuine. Many housemates appear preoccupied with curating their public image instead of playing organically, robbing the show of its spontaneity.
One glaring concern is the pattern of sympathy-based voting. Take Season 6 winner Whitemoney, whose kitchen skills earned him favor. Yet, despite his popularity, he failed to leverage his culinary appeal post-show — no food businesses, no cooking show, no training programs. Instead, he pivoted to music, leaving fans to wonder if the title is truly going to the most promising star.
Format Tweaks, Flat Results
The previous season, dubbed “No Lose Guard,” introduced a twist by pairing contestants but this innovation fell flat. The issue wasn’t the format, fans say, but the casting. Without dynamic personalities, no structure can save a season.
Season 10: High Stakes, Higher Expectations
With the tenth season marking a decade of BBNaija, expectations are sky-high. Fan leader and Room 404 community moderator Tola Sarumi told The Nollywood Reporter what she believes the show must do to win back its audience.
“I hope production is more active this season. Don’t let the housemates get too comfortable or strategic,” she said, stressing the need for spontaneity and unpredictability.
She added, “It’s the 10th season , a marquee year. We need a show worthy of that milestone. Intrigue, unpredictability, never-before-seen twists all of it.”
Systemic Overhaul Needed
Tola’s critique wasn’t limited to housemates. She pointed to structural issues like the flawed voting system and the oversaturation of sponsored tasks.
“Housemates spend too much time doing ads. We need people who can create organic content. The show shouldn’t feel like one long commercial break.”
The balance between brand partnerships and genuine interactions is critical. Over-commercialization erodes the very thing fans tune in for unscripted human dynamics.
Still, she remains cautiously hopeful.
“The impact will come from conversations. If the show sparks real discussions again, then Season 10 could be unforgettable. I’m excited.”
All Eyes on July 26 & 27
With the premiere just days away, all eyes are now on the “Certified” housemates and the production team behind them. Can they bring the bold, chaotic energy that made BBNaija a phenomenon? Or will the franchise continue its slow drift into mediocrity?
