Fasting is an essential part of many religious traditions, and for Muslims, Ramadan is a sacred month marked by daily fasting from dawn to dusk. This period commemorates when the Quran, the Muslim holy book, was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). After sunset, Muslims break their fast with a meal called iftar, often shared with family and friends. Eating and drinking are permitted throughout the night until suhur, the pre-dawn meal.

Beyond fasting, Ramadan is also a time for increased prayers, self-reflection, and acts of worship. Muslims often engage in nightly prayers and recite the Quran. The Islamic calendar follows a lunar cycle, so the dates of Ramadan may vary by location based on moon sightings. This year, Ramadan began on Friday, February 28, 2025, and will end on Saturday, March 29, 2025. The following day, Sunday, March 30, 2025, marks Eid al-Fitr, a religious celebration signifying the end of fasting.

Now that Ramadan has begun, here are some practical ways to take care of yourself during this spiritually significant time.

Find a System That Works for You

To save time and reduce stress, consider meal prepping in advance, especially if you are responsible for cooking for yourself or your family. If you prefer freshly made meals, ensure you have all the necessary ingredients ready before suhur and iftar. If storage is a challenge, plan meals accordingly and utilize food delivery services for groceries when necessary.

Delegate When Possible

If you are a mother, sister, or aunt responsible for preparing meals, don’t hesitate to delegate tasks. Sharing responsibilities can ease the burden and allow you to focus on both your physical and mental well-being.

Abstain from Immoral Activities

Ramadan is a time of spiritual purification. Avoid anything that could compromise your fast, such as inappropriate interactions, consuming harmful content, or engaging in distractions that take away from worship. Many people reduce their social media usage or mute specific content to stay focused.

Maintain a Balanced Diet

A well-balanced diet will help sustain you throughout the fasting hours. Include nutrient-rich foods that provide lasting energy and hydration. While it may not be the best time to experiment with new meals, consider ways to increase your caloric intake with familiar dishes. Prioritize water, fruits, and fiber-rich foods to stay nourished.

Prioritize Getting Home on Time

If possible, plan your day to ensure you get home early enough to break your fast in a calm and relaxed environment.

Build a Strong Support System

Surround yourself with family and friends who share similar experiences during Ramadan. Engaging in discussions with loved ones can provide encouragement and a sense of community. Many mosques also organize Ramadan lectures, offering an opportunity for spiritual growth.

Stay Focused on Worship

Above all, remember the purpose of Ramadan. Prioritize prayer, seek out mosques for congregational prayers if you are in a new location, and extend kindness by helping those in need.
