Nearly three weeks after wiping his Instagram posts clean, celebrated Nigerian Afrobeats talent, Ololade Asake, makes a stylish comeback on the platform–this time with the famed British magazine, GQ.
In a joint post that contained two images from the GQ photoshoot, the Grammy-nominated singer painted the town red and cream–in style! Clad in a red Dzojchen shirt paired with a cream Armani vest and Dolce & Gabbana pants, he posed beside a standout red-funneled speaker.
In a recent interview with GQ, Asake shared insights about his career, album “Work of Art,” and personality. The publication describes him–and rightly so–as “the most important new voice in Afrobeats and global music.”
Among the favorable highlights from the GQ interview was the revelation of the story behind the bold “ASAKE” tattoo that lines the 29-year-old’s neck, which he says he inked at a time when his music career light bulb was dimming. He also expressed pride in his uncanny ability to discern people’s intentions, stating, “I can tell when I see somebody with a pure mind, pure heart, good intentions.” As for his previous album, “Work of Art,” he deems it a tool for others to understand better and connect with him.
Typical of the Asake Nigerians come to know and love, he submits himself to evolution, subtly hinting at future explorations in his upcoming album. “I’ll never limit myself to one thing. I might wake up tomorrow and tell you I want to do an all-reggae. Maybe that’s where God just wants to direct me.”
This revealing interview comes at an exciting time for Asake, just as he shut down Toronto with a performance at the Scotiabank Arena on Friday, April 12.
