The Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) may be over, but the fashion will live on forever. The annual award show gathered Africa’s brightest stars in one place as attendees dazzled in a vibrant showcase of African fashion, blending traditional influences with modern elegance.
This year’s red carpet included tailored Isi Agus, bejeweled gowns, and bold corsets, reflecting a strong sense of pride and identity.
However, not everyone hit the fashion pinnacle; a few attendees missed the fashion memo, opting for ill-fitted ensembles or mismatched accessories that didn’t quite capture the night’s glamour.
So who rocked the red carpet and who attended looking like a hot mess? Let’s review.
Jackie Appiah
“My eyes! Oh, my eyes!”
Who is the stunning angel that fell from the sky and graced AMAA night with her presence? Jackie Appiah!
Her dress was a dazzling symphony of silver sequins, capturing the light with every step she took. The form-fitting silhouette and plunging neckline exuded elegance and grace, while the shimmering fabric cascaded down into a breathtaking train, reminiscent of starlight on a serene night. It was, simply put, a true masterpiece of glamour and sophistication.
She dressed like an award winner, and oh boy, did she win the award.
Ben Ireogbu
“The emperor, the conqueror, the champion, the lion.…”
Regal is what Ireogbu oozed when he graced the AMAA red carpet. Clad in a golden-draped see-through overall, intricately embroidered with golden leaf patterns and featuring a flowing train, he was a sight to behold. The white coral beads adorning his neck and wrists only heightened the regal vibe, making it nearly impossible to believe he wasn’t a king somewhere. To top off this majestic look, he rocked a leopard-print cap that added a touch of fierceness to the ensemble—perfect for commanding respect and attention.
Always remember folks, gold is bold!
Rita Dominic
Rich Aunty Vibes.
The Nigerian actress delivered the sexy but classy aura in an outfit that quite frankly, only a few could pull off. The glossy finish of the outfit gave the dress a luxurious look, while the rich color added a touch of elegance. The flowy design made it both chic and comfortable.
This AMAA darling sure knows how to make a grand entrance.
Murunyu Duncan
“I’m your pilot and thank you for using Duncan Airlines.”
On a night with many boring suits, Murunyu Duncan’s fit was the only one to turn heads—a classic example of throwing fun at a dress and calling the world to party on it.
The look featured a sharp black-and-white patterned jacket, courtesy of Fintan Fashion House, with swirling circles and splotches like it was born in an abstract painting.
No superhero is complete without a cape and the stylish coat did its job.
Blessing Oluranti
When you have to protect others from too much drip
As if sporting a beaded sky-blue corset dress wasn’t enough, an exaggerated sleeve had to be added to shield the actress from the relentless gazes of onlookers—and protect public eyes from too much slay.
You could surely have heard a “Blessing mapawa!” from someone on the carpet when she stepped out of her vehicle.
Bucci Franklin
Son of the soil
Although missing out on the Best Actor in a Leading Role award, Bucci Franklin left the AMAA with the Most Edible Gentleman in Igboland award, all thanks to stylist Chukwukadibia Ezeanyanwu solid choice.
The Isi Agu-themed burgundy velvet contrasted nicely with the cream-colored loose-fitting top underneath sports elbow-length sleeves. An Igbo traditional red feathered cap offered the requisite cherry on top.
And of course, no one can forget the lion’s head walking stick that made him look like a true odogwu.
Selyn “Gumdrops” Okereke
Not quite the look…..
The makeup artist and nominee tried to impress with her sequin number, but the dress unfortunately wasn’t award-show material, and neither were the shoes. Prom or a night out with friends seemed like the appropriate occasion for the outfit, but she’s handed a pass because her makeup is gorgeous.
Chinedu Ikedieze
Paint the town red…or not.
Marrying a Westernized kaftan with crimson pants to match? Obviously, this childhood legend set out to rival the red carpet itself.
Unfortunately, the patterned cap wasn’t the best choice for this eye-catching look. Neither was the pendant piece on his neck which could’ve been perfect if it was less rockstar-esque.
We also couldn’t help but wonder how it would’ve turned out if stylist dr.legendclothing had opted for some matching encrusted papal crimson shoes instead of the classic black.
Although he missed the chance to go full Deadpool, Ikedieze is undoubtedly among the best-dressed of the night!
Nene Fembe
There’s a lot going on.
The cinematographer stunned (did she really?) on the carpet in what appeared to be traditional attire. While the top showcased a striking design and beautiful colors, the sheer tulle skirt was overwhelming and would’ve benefited from a more structured silhouette.
Additionally, the intricate patterns on the bodice detached from the overall elegance, making it appear too busy.
Her nails, makeup, and shoes were however to die for!
Femi Adebayo
Did someone steal a bunch of pockets?
Who looked like a masquerade from the waist down but a civil servant up top? Well, Femi Adebayo at the AMAA!
A ₦300,000 “Egun pants” at Africa’s greatest celebration of visual arts would’ve been good if paired with a similar courageous top. Instead, he chose a plain shirt and appeared like he stole a bunch of oversized pockets from the clothing farm.
Although the aforementioned suggestion would end up in the “what could’ve been” store, he’s also handed a pass simply because those pants look too…open to waste.
Vimbai Mutinhiri
We saved the best for last.
The Zimbabwean actress was a sight to behold on AMAA night in a fitted bodice adorned with intricate beading and a satin-like skirt. Her outfit was the true definition of luxurious, elegant, and fashion-savvy.
What made the ensemble even more alluring was Vimbai Mutinhiri’s stylist, Luxfabricplace, choice of colors that highlighted her skin tone. One can never go wrong with bold colors on dark skin; the actress was living proof of that.
The African star was born ready for the red carpet, and this is what we want to see more of—classy outfits, body tea, and sophistication.
