The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced the official theme for the 2025 Met Gala: “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.”

This year’s highly anticipated fashion event will explore the legacy of Black fashion, from historical influences to contemporary expressions of identity and creativity.

Scheduled for May 5, 2025, the gala will pay homage to Black dandyism—particularly how Black men have used style to assert individuality, power, and cultural pride over the centuries. The accompanying exhibition at the Met’s Costume Institute will feature archival pieces, garments, and accessories tracing the evolution of Black fashion from the 18th century to the present.

The theme takes inspiration from guest curator Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book, “Slaves in Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.” The book examines the role of fashion in shaping identity, representation, masculinity, and sexuality within the Black diaspora.

As always, guests must follow a dress code—this year titled “Tailored For You.” While open to interpretation, the directive encourages attendees to reflect the theme in their outfits. Expect a mix of jazz-era influences, classic tailoring, and bold, statement-making ensembles celebrating Black style and craftsmanship.

NBA superstar LeBron James will serve as this year’s honorary chair, with Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and Anna Wintour as co-chairs.

The Met Gala Committee features a diverse lineup of Black creatives from film, fashion, arts, music, sports, and literature, including Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Tyla, André 3000, Grace Wales Bonner, Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens, Jordan Casteel, Dapper Dan, Doechii, Ayo Edebiri, Edward Enninful, Jeremy O. Harris, Branden Jacob-Jenkins, Rashid Johnson, Regina King, Spike Lee and Tonya Lewis Lee, Audra McDonald, Janelle Monáe, Jeremy Pope, Angel Reese, Sha’Carri Richardson, Olivier Rousteing, Usher, and Kara Walker.

With its deep cultural significance, the 2025 Met Gala promises to be a landmark event, honoring Black excellence and pushing the boundaries of fashion’s most prestigious night.
