There is neither sleep nor slumber for “A Quiet Place: Day One” at the box office as it celebrates its first week in theaters.
The Paramount Pictures-distributed horror sequel, released on June 28, has recorded over ₦40.5 million in its first week at the Nigerian box office, enough to finish second in the weekly rankings. Its ₦26 million opening weekend is the largest ever debut for a horror film in Nigeria.
Interestingly, it had over 2,000 more admissions (ticket sales) than its predecessor, “A Quiet Place” when it was released on May 28. 2021.
Meanwhile, local releases “Lakatabu” and “Muri & Ko” both crossed the ₦100 million mark, although the former did so four days earlier than the latter.
An elated FilmOne Entertainment, the distributor of the comedy “Muri & Ko,” shared, “The boys don blow! Muri & Ko is smashing it at the box office with over 100 million Naira made.”
“Lakatabu,” which features acclaimed actor Odunlade Adekola, earned ₦40 million in its second week (June 28 – July 4) and ₦21 million over the weekend bringing its total to ₦126 million as of this writing.
Only Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” had a more impressive week than either “Lakatabu” or “A Quiet Place.”
The fourth installment of the Bad Boys franchise recorded ₦46.7 million, the highest of any film for the June 28 – July 4 week, according to data from the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN).
In addition to the roughly ₦26 million it earned in its fifth weekend, the total cumulative earnings of the action comedy stands at ₦360 million as of this writing, significantly surpassing the ₦251 million finish of “Ajosepo” to extend its record as the highest-grossing movie of the year in Nigeria.
The week’s box office performance indicates a growing appetite for diverse films in Nigeria, with both local and international releases making their mark. However, the arrival of Disney and Marvel’s tentpole, “Deadpool & Wolverine” on July 26, is set to shake the rankings of both the Nigerian and global box office.
