Nollywood actor and producer Adebowale Adebayo, popularly known as Mr Macaroni, has been added to the jury panel of the upcoming  2025 Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia (SSFF & ASIA).

Regarded as one of the leading international short film festivals in Asia, SSSF & ASIA has announced this year’s theme: “Creative Active Generative”.The festival will run from May 28, 2025 to June 30, 2025, showcasing over 250 short films from around the world. The lineup promises to reflect emerging trends and fresh perspectives in global storytelling.

The opening ceremony is set for May 28, 2025, and will take place at the Takanawa Gateway City, Tokyo. Attendees will include Korean star Oh Man-seok from “Crash Landing on You” alongside jury member and acclaimed Japanese filmmaker Shunji Iwai. Joining them are actor Juri Ueno, producer Miyuki Fukuma, model-actress Tao Okamoto, and Nigeria’s very own Mr Macaroni.

Since 2020, some of the standout themes at the film festival include family dynamics and intergenerational relationships,  which have dominated submissions, capturing diverse cultural experiences across regions. The influence of artificial intelligence also continues to grow in the filmmaking world—over 240 submissions made use of AI tools for color grading, voice-over work, graphics, and even script development. However, only a few entries were entirely AI-generated.

Special screenings this year include  “Marion,”  produced by Cate Blanchett;  “Drifting,” starring Paul Mescal; and “Miracle Mile,” directed by “Squid Game” creator Hwang Dong-hyuk. Other notable premieres include “African Family Dinner” by Ibrahim Mursal, “They Call Me the Tattoo Witch” by Lindsay Nyman, “Rebirth” by Makoto Imamura, “Ikigai” by Trent Cooper, and “Oya Dance!” by Naomi Soneye-Thomas.

In addition to its existing categories, SSFF & ASIA 2025 will introduce new ones such as Horror & Suspense, K-SHORT, and Saudi Visions—the latter celebrating 70 years of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Japan. The War and the Power of Love Program, supported by the Red Cross, will present films that reflect on the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, exploring themes of resilience and wartime experiences.

As an Academy Award accredited festival, SSFF & ASIA 2025 also announced nominees across its categories, and the top short films in Animation, Horror, Kids, AI, and Neo Japan  will be eligible for Oscar consideration in 2026. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, SSFF & ASIA continues to serve as a launchpad for rising filmmakers, providing a global stage for talent and innovation.

With a diverse selection of films, industry engagement and Nigerian inclusion, the festival is set to further its legacy in shaping the future of short film storytelling.
