Nigerian singer-songwriter Ayra Starr has become the first Nigerian female artiste to debut on the Billboard 200 Album charts thanks to her critically acclaimed sophomore album, “The Year I Turned 21.”
The album debuts at No. 195 with 8K units sold in the first week of tracking. “The Year I Turned 21″ has been received well by fans and critics who have praised the Grammy-nominated singer for her genre-bending take on the Afro-fusion wave.
The album has been blessed with visuals for select songs like the Giveon-assisted ballad “Last Heartbreak Song,” the soulful, “21,” and the Afro-dance tune, “Commas.”
Ayra Starr’s trailblazing achievement is a source of inspiration to other young Nigerian female artists, and her dominance on the global stage is a pure representation of the Afrobeats genre.
