Global music star Billie Eilish is reportedly in talks to headline a new film adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s iconic novel The Bell Jar, directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Sarah Polley.

If finalised, the project would mark Eilish’s first leading role in a feature-length film, building on her acting debut in the series Swarm. The 24-year-old singer would portray Esther Greenwood, a young woman navigating identity, societal pressure, and severe depression in 1950s America.

Hollywood has long struggled to adapt The Bell Jar. Previous attempts to cast stars such as Kirsten Dunst and Dakota Fanning never materialised, making this adaptation one of the most anticipated in recent years. Published in 1963, the novel remains a landmark exploration of mental health and womanhood.

Industry insiders report that the project has strong backing from Plan B Entertainment, co-founded by Brad Pitt, and StudioCanal, with Joy Gorman Wettels producing. Focus Features is expected to handle U.S. distribution.

The film will expand Eilish’s presence in film and television, following her performance in Swarm and her upcoming 3D concert film with James Cameron.
