Academy Award-winning director Christopher Nolan has released the first official poster for his upcoming epic “The Odyssey”, slated for a July 17, 2026 premiere.

Based on Homer’s classic text, the film reimagines the mythological journey of Odysseus through Nolan’s signature cinematic lens.

The poster features a weathered, tilted sculpture of a Greek king’s head—presumably Odysseus—evoking themes of downfall and legacy. With the tagline “Defy the Gods,” the film hints at its central conflict: a mortal man confronting divine forces during his tumultuous journey home after the Trojan War.

“The Odyssey” follows Odysseus as he faces a series of supernatural trials in his effort to return to Ithaca, weaving in themes of resilience, defiance, and fate. Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, with Tom Holland portraying his son Telemachus and Charlize Theron as the sorceress Circe.

The ensemble cast includes Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, Bill Irwin, Samantha Morton, Jesse Garcia, Will Yun Lee, Rafi Gavron, Shiloh Fernandez, Mia Goth, Corey Hawkins, Nick E. Tarabay, Jimmy Gonzales, Maurice Compte, Michael Vlamis, Iddo Goldberg, Josh Stewart, Cosmo Jarvis, and Ryan Hurst in undisclosed roles.

With an estimated $250 million budget, “The Odyssey” is Nolan’s most expensive project to date and will become the first major studio production shot entirely on IMAX film cameras. Principal photography began in February 2025, with locations spanning Morocco, Greece, Sicily, Iceland, Scotland, and Los Angeles.

Although production is still ongoing, the film’s trailer began screening in select cinemas in July—consistent with Nolan’s support for the traditional theatrical experience. The broader marketing campaign has yet to roll out.

The film marks a rare return to Greek mythology in mainstream cinema. Few large-scale adaptations of classical myth have emerged in recent years, with “Wonder Woman” (2017) being the most prominent title loosely inspired by that tradition.

Nolan will serve as writer, director, and co-producer alongside Emma Thomas under their Syncopy Inc. banner.

“The Odyssey” will be distributed by Universal Pictures.
