Cillian Murphy is set to don the flat cap once again as he reprises his role as Birmingham crime boss Thomas Shelby in the upcoming “Peaky Blinders” film for Netflix. Production has officially begun on what Netflix describes as “an epic continuation of the multi-award-winning, six-season gangster saga.”
The film picks up a few years after the series finale, following the Shelby family as they navigate the political, economic, and social upheavals in post-war England.
Joining Murphy in the cast are Rebecca Ferguson, Barry Keoghan, and Tim Roth. However, it remains unclear if original cast members from the series will also return.
Steven Knight, the creator of “Peaky Blinders”, is writing the screenplay, with Tom Harper, who directed episodes in the show’s first season, stepping in as director. While no official release date has been announced, the film is slated for a Netflix premiere.
“Peaky Blinders” originally aired on the BBC from 2013 to 2022, chronicling the rise of the Shelby gang as they expanded their criminal empire in the aftermath of World War I.
The series became a cultural phenomenon, gaining a global audience after Netflix acquired the rights in 2021. Its influence extended beyond television, inspiring fashion trends, social media memes, and sparking discussions on historical and political topics.
