The supernatural horror, rooted in Igbo spirituality, joins the official selection at Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival.
Nnamdi Kanaga’s supernatural horror film “Water Girl” has been officially selected to screen at the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival (MVAAFF).
The screening is scheduled for Thursday, August 7, 2025, at 10 p.m.
“Water Girl,” Kanaga’s third directorial effort, draws heavily from Igbo mythology and themes of African womanhood.

The film features performances from Stella Damasus, Kenneth Okolie, and Florence Onuma.
Kanaga confirmed the screening date in a social media post on August 2. “Rooted in Igbo spirituality and carried by the strength of African womanhood, ‘Water Girl’ is a story born from ancestral memory and the healing waters of truth,” he wrote.

Reflecting on the film’s selection, Kanaga described it as “a testament to the power of authentic African storytelling,” praising the cast and crew’s dedication to cultural integrity and emotional depth.
The director is known for his earlier works “Talksman” (2019) and “The Hail Mary” (2020), and with “Water Girl,” he continues to build on a body of work that centers African narratives and mythologies.
