Nigerian director Daniel Oriahi has announced that his film “The Weekend” has been selected for the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival. The prestigious festival, which will take place in New York City from June 5 to 16, 2024, is a platform for independent filmmakers.
Oriahi shared the news on his Instagram page, expressing his delight at having his film chosen for the festival. “I’m thrilled to share that my latest film, ‘The Weekend,’ has been chosen as an Official Selection for the 2024 Tribeca Festival,” he wrote.
Oriahi’s journey as a filmmaker began with his debut film, ‘Misfit,’ a psychological horror movie created on a limited budget. In his Instagram post, he spoke about his collaboration with Trino Studios, which led to the success of his 2018 film, ‘Sylvia.’
“Following our success with ‘Sylvia’ in 2018, I desired to explore various horror subgenres, drawing inspiration from classics like “Rosemary’s Baby,” “The Shining,” and “Hereditary,” Oriahi said.
The director also mentioned that the script for “The Weekend” was presented to him by Uche Okocha, the executive director of Trino Studios, in 2022, and it aligned with his creative vision. “In 2022, Uche presented me with a script titled “The Weekend,” aligning perfectly with my artistic vision. Its inclusion in Tribeca’s Midnight section feels like a full-circle moment,” he said.
“The Weekend” is a drama thriller film that follows an orphan girl who visits her fiancée’s seemingly idyllic family and discovers their sinister secret. The film features a cast that includes Aniunoh, Bucci Franklin, Meg Otanwa, Keppy Ekpeyong Bassey, Gloria Anozie-Young, and Damilola Ogunsi.
Oriahi expressed his gratitude to Trino Studios and all his collaborators for their unwavering support, saying, “Almost two decades ago, I turned to filmmaking as a means of healing and self-expression, and to this day, it continues to motivate me forward. I extend my gratitude to Trino Studios and all collaborators for their unwavering belief in me.”
The selection of “The Weekend” for the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival is a medium to showcase Oriahi’s talent and the growing recognition of Nigerian filmmakers on the global stage.
