“Deadpool and Wolverine” has become the highest-grossing movie of 2024 in Nigeria, earning ₦467.5 million ($611,000) in just three weeks.
The Disney/Marvel Studios film surpassed the previous record holder, Sony’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” which had earned ₦457.5 million since its late June release.
“Deadpool and Wolverine” reached this milestone after grossing ₦10.6 million on Saturday, Aug. 17. The movie’s success in Nigeria mirrors its global performance, with a worldwide total of $1.143 billion.
The R-rated superhero film, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, drew over 26,000 admissions during its five-day debut from July 26 to July 28, earning ₦144 million ($188,000).
Internationally, “Deadpool and Wolverine” has broken several opening weekend records and surpassed “Joker” (2019) as the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time. It currently ranks as the second-highest grossing movie of the year globally, behind Disney’s “Inside Out 2” at $1.6 billion.
With no major competition expected until DC’s “Joker: Folie À Deux” in October, industry experts predict “Deadpool and Wolverine” will maintain its record-breaking status in Nigeria for the foreseeable future.
