As the festive season concludes and holiday tracks fade from the Billboard Hot 100, a new anthem has claimed the top spot: “Die With a Smile“. The ballad by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars has risen to number one after spending several weeks in the top ten, marking a significant achievement for both artists.
This milestone marks Lady Gaga’s sixth number-one hit and Bruno Mars’ ninth on the prestigious chart. Gaga now joins an elite group of artists, including Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson, as the only performers to have multiple Hot 100 number ones in three different decades—”the ’00s”, “’10s”, and “’20s”.
In reaction to the news, Gaga expressed her gratitude to her fans. “Thank you to all the monsters and hooligans for helping make “Die With a Smile” #1 on the Billboard Hot 100! We love you and are so grateful,” she posted on Instagram. Mars, too, took to social media, thanking his fans for the support. “Lil love record that could. I love this song and I love you all. Thank you so much!” he tweeted on X.
“Die With a Smile” made its surprise debut on August 16, 2024, entering the Billboard Hot 100 at number three later that month. The track has since become an undeniable radio hit and a social media favorite, especially on platforms like TikTok, solidifying the musical prowess of both Gaga and Mars. It has now enjoyed an impressive twenty-week run on the chart.
In addition to its Hot 100 success, the song currently holds the number-three spot on the Billboard Pop Airplay chart, where it previously reached number one in late November 2024.
Bruno Mars also has another entry on the Hot 100 this week with his collaboration with K-pop idol ROSE, “APT”, which climbed to number five after peaking at number eight. This marks ROSE’s first top-five hit as a soloist, making history as the first female K-pop artist to achieve a top-ten hit on the chart.
Meanwhile, Gaga’s electropop single “Disease“, which dropped on October 25, 2024, re-enters the Hot 100 at number eighty after previously peaking at number fourteen.
